While running, always concentrate on moving your arms. If your arms don’t move, your legs don’t move. After most of my best races, my arms hurt more than my legs. That told me that I was using my arms.

You can’t move your arms if they are swinging down by your hips or dangling up around your shoulders. Your elbows should be swinging alongside your rib cage and driving forward in a rhythmic fashion.

A good exercise is to take a set of light barbells and drive them backward and forward, just like you are running. Do this in front of a mirror.

If your arms get tired in a race, do a “check out.” This means dropping your arms down to your legs and let them hang there for a few seconds before you start swinging them again.
