Academy runner Lucy Harman has come a long way in the sport over the past year. Now she is going the longest way to a meet she couldn’t even imagine.
By virtue of her 16th place finish at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in Timaru in June, Harman has been named to the New Zealand team to compete in the 2020 World Schools Cross Country Championships in Slovakia.
Harman, one of 12 New Zealand athletes to be selected, emerged as the top junior women’s distance runner this past year. She dominated the Tasman Championships in the 800m, 1,500m, and cross country as a Year 11 student at Marlborough Girls College. She placed eighth last spring at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in a personal best 4:51.04 for the 1,500m and was second in the 800m and 1,500m at the South Island Cross Country Championships at the SaxtonTrack.
Harman is the 22nd academy athlete to be selected to compete overseas for New Zealand.
