Strong finish propels Bowen to silver medal at NZ Cross Country Championships

Matt Bowen chased Hamilton’s Joseph Moore to no avail at Sunday’s New Zealand Cross Country Championships in Upper Hutt. But a strong finish propelled Bowen well ahead of Moore’s brother, Adam, for second place in the 16 and under boys race.
Bowen, a Year 10 student at Waimea College, finished the rolling 4km course at Harcourt Park in 13:25,  16 seconds behind Joseph and four seconds ahead of Adam. Bowen was followed by Athletics Nelson teammates Josh Gill in eighth, Fenlon Bayley in 12th, and Oliver McCormack in 15th.  Had team scores been tallied in the Boys 16 race, Athletics Nelson would have won the team title.
Fletcher Pickworth, representing Tasman, finished fifth in the M20 8km race in 26:45 in his first-ever 8km race. Ben Baker placed 15th.
Waimea College student Luke Clatworthy finished 14th in the M18 race, and Josh Sheridan was 20th. Results of the meet can be found at athletics.org.nz.
